Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Hello! Time for another Top Ten Tuesday and today we’re chatting about books I’m avoiding reading for some reason and another. This is a fun one because I feel like this is something most readers do and I’m so interested to know why people are avoiding certain books! So here are ten that I’m avoiding and why!
1. It by Stephen King
Why I’m avoiding it:
It’s probably quite obvious why I’m avoiding this one! It’s because I’m a massive scaredy-cat! I really want to read more Stephen King and It has been everywhere over the past few years so I do want to try it but it just looks terrifying! Additionally – it’s also really long and would require quite a time commitment.
2. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Why I’m avoiding it:
I remember watching the movie version of this one when I was youngish and finding it a bit intense but also great so I do want to read the book. I’m kind of avoiding it because it’s a BIG book and so I need time to properly devote to it but another reason is that it’s one of those books that I think will require extra concentration and I really need to be in the right frame of mind for it.
3. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Why I’m avoiding it:
I absolutely loved the Six of Crows duology and I fully expect to love the Shadow and Bone series too but because I’m looking forward to it so much I’m almost worried about reading it in case it doesn’t live up to my sky high expectations! That sounds like an odd reason but there it is!
4. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Why I’m avoiding it:
This series seems to have a mega huge fanbase who all seem to adore it and because of that it has been on my TBR for a while now and I do own the trilogy but I have yet to pick it up. I think the issue with this one is that it has so much hype that I’m scared I won’t love it as much as everyone else seems to and so I keep putting it off. I will read it at some point though – promise!
5. Triptych by Karin Slaughter
Why I’m avoiding it:
I adore Karin Slaughter’s books. I have read almost all of her stand alone novels and the whole Grant County series and loved it but so far I haven’t yet started her other series – The Will Trent Series – of which the first is Triptych. The reason I haven’t started this series is that I know once I do, I will want to binge read the entire set which is a whopping nine books and that is going to take a while! So I really need to be able to devote a big chunk of time to it and I haven’t been able to do that yet.
6. His Dark Materials Series by Philip Pullman
Why I’m avoiding it:
I’m not actually totally sure why I’m avoiding reading this one but I am! I love the premise and it seems a very well loved series but like a few of the others on this list it is going to take a while to read all three and that’s before even considering The Book of Dust! Hopefully I can get to it soon because I would like to read it before the BBC series is out if I can!
7. The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell
Why I’m avoiding it:
The Silent Companions looks so fantastically gothic and fabulous but it also looks really scary and as we have established – I’m a baby whilst reading scary stories! I think I’ll have to read this one during the daytime only…
8. A Girl Called Shameless by Laura Steven
Why I’m avoiding it:
I’m avoiding this one for a strange reason and that reason is because I know I’ll love it just as much as I loved it’s predecessor, The Exact Opposite of Okay. So, basically I’m kind of saving this for a rainy day in a way. I want to read it at a time when I really need a fun and heart-warming book to read with an awesome main character.
9. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Why I’m avoiding it:
This is another case of the hype being really huge and I’m worried it won’t live up to it! I’m sure it will and I’ll love it as much as everyone else but I’m still hesitating to pick it up for now. Another possible reason is that it’s about music and that’s not one of my big interests so I don’t gravitate towards Daisy Jones automatically. However, I think I just need to give it a go because I think it’s worth taking a chance on.
10. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Why I’m avoiding it:
I did read this one or at least most of it over a decade ago and just really couldn’t see what the fuss was about at all. I want to give it another go because I think you have a different reading experience when you read a book at a vastly different age from the first time you read it! But, in spite of wanting to try it again, I just keep avoiding it because of my younger self’s boredom with it which is a hurdle I need to get over.

Life With All The Books 
Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite books and Yes the count of monte cristo made my list as well.

I’ve read The Outsider and Carrie and I liked both but The Outsider did scare me at several points! I want to read The Green Mile and 11/22/63 next I think! Are you a Stephen King fan? 😊💛

I too am avoiding the count of monte Cristo. I adored the film adaptation with Jim Caviezel (not sure if that’s spelled correctly) but the book definitely seems a bit daunting to me!!! Great TTT!!

I have a low tolerance for horror as well! I can understand being intimidated by big page counts. It would be such a let down if the book didn’t turn out to be worth the effort, but on the other hand it is so rewarding when they are! I read Wuthering Heights several years ago. It is definitely intense and dark, but I’m glad I read it. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

I’m worried about the Daisy Jones hype as well but I think I’m going to listen to it as an audiobook at the end of the month and finally get into it 🙂

I loved The Exact Opposite of Okay too but I was disappointed in A Girl Called Shameless, I thought The Exact Opposite of Okay worked better as a standalone and didn’t really need a sequel.

Oh no! I do understand it possibly not needing a sequel but I did love the characters so I’ll have to try it! 😊

Great TTT list! Your reasons for avoiding them are so relatable. The hype is usually what puts me off reading a book because I’m scared that it’ll fall short. Daisy Jones was one of the ones I was most scared to read but I’m glad I finally picked it up because it was AMAZE. For me, anyway 😅

I absolutely loved “The Silent Companions”. If you avoid it, you’ll really be missing out on a good book.

Totally agree with Wuthering Heights. I read it a few years ago and just didn’t care for it. I feel like I need to read it again because I feel like I must have missed something. I’m not sure I’ll ever get to it, though.

I need to reread Wuthering Heights too — good point about getting more out of a book when reading it at a later age. I read it on my own in high school and it was good/fine, but I feel like it would have a greater impact now that I’ve read a lot more British novels from around that area.
I did mine here.
