Summary:
The House of Atreus is spiralling into self-destruction – a woman must find a way to break the family curse.
Queen Clytemnestra’s world shatters when Agamemnon, a rival to the throne of Mycenae, storms her palace, destroys her family and claims not only the throne but Clytemnestra herself. Tormented by her loss, she vows to do all she can to protect the children born from her unhappy marriage to Agamemnon. But when her husband casts his ruthless gaze towards the wealthy citadel of Troy, his ambitions threaten to once more destroy the family Clytemnestra loves.
From one of Greek mythology’s most reviled characters – a woman who challenged the absolute power of men – comes this fiery tale of power, family rivalry and a mother’s burning love.
Review:
There have been rather a lot of Greek mythology related retellings of late – but I have to say Clytemnestra’s Bind is right up there with the very best of them! I absolutely adored this book, with its powerful characterisation and beautifully detailed prose. I’ve read quite a few books that feature Clytemnestra in some manner, however she has rarely felt quite so real and thoroughly alive. This book brings her genuinely harrowing story to brutal, bold and compelling life with a real sense of shocking immediacy to it.
The story takes us further back than I’m used to in Clytemnestra’s tale and the pace is more restrained initially. However, this is completely necessary to build an intricately drawn picture of this strong and complex woman and the horrors she has endured. The author makes it impossible not to feel for her and to root for her in seemingly untenable situations. I was totally caught up in this beautifully crafted and vibrant novel from the beginning to end and I am eager with anticipation for the next in what promises to be a spectacular series. If you have any interest in Greek mythology, or indeed a powerful story of the strength of motherhood, then Clytemnestra’s Bind is an absolute must read!
