Book Summary:
For the curious and the adventurous! Turn to any date and you’ll find something to learn or do suggested by folklore of the day, the month, or the season.
Some suggestions will take no more effort than sticking your head out the window to look at the clouds, while others might involve knee pads and scouring giant chalk horses cut into hillsides. Taking inspiration from folklore found around the world, each daily entry is a tiny snapshot of what goes on – be it animal or plant lore, love predictions, the zodiac, the supernatural, food, festivals, divination, anniversaries, the weather or luck. By following the customs and traditions of the ritual year, you’ll find yourself becoming more engaged with what’s happening about you and discover how every month and season creates its own identity.
Dip into this fascinating book at any time of the year and discover something new and intriguing about the world around you. Just beware of the hare…
Review:
I find folklore generally incredibly fascinating, the quirkier the better, so I was really excited to get my hands on this absolutely beautiful little book. The hardback is stunning, full of detailed and whimsical illustrations all packed into a perfectly-sized almanac! Everyday Folklore takes you through each day of the year with a little piece of interesting information, suggestion, piece of lore, ritual or custom that lets you learn something and relate more deeply to the seasons and the natural/spiritual world. Today’s piece of information, for example, tells us about the lore surrounding black cats, since today is apparently National Black Cat Day!
I found this an absolute joy to peruse and loved learning something odd, amusing, mystical or otherwise each day. The folklore encapsulates different parts of the world and enlightened me to some truly intriguing customs that I had no idea existed. It’s a lovely book to dip into every day but I found myself unable to stop reading on, totally engrossed in the magical nature of Everyday Folklore. It’s written with wit, intelligence and a clear knowledge of the subject and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in the world around them and the rich landscape of folklore. It would also be an absolutely gorgeous gift!
