Summary:

A murdered girl. A convicted killer. Justice served…

Or is it?

It’s been fourteen years since Greer’s older sister Eliza was murdered. Her family has never been the same. Nor has the small town of Ludlow.

The killer was convicted and executed but another body has been found.

A copycat, according to the authorities, but Greer is convinced there is more to the story.

And she is returning to Ludlow in search of the truth.

Review:

I’m a big fan of Amy Engel’s books so I was excited to read this one and I have to say that I very much enjoyed it. In all honesty, it’s not my favourite of Engel’s books however it is just as well written, tense and deeply compelling as all her work. I Did It For You is a slow burn mystery which is closer to a character study and an exploration of grief than a thriller. One of its biggest strengths is the evocative depiction of a small town and the insular way they often operate. Greer is an intriguing narrator who is clearly haunted by the death of her sister and also hiding things she doesn’t want to remember from perhaps even herself. This makes for a slow buildup of tension that eventually ratchets up to a surprising reveal. I Did It For You is a quiet book in many ways but it has a strong sense of atmosphere and is a moving depiction of the consequences of loss and trauma.

★★★★☆

I received an e-copy of the book via Netgalley. My review is entirely my own honest opinion.
