Top Ten Tuesday: Authors I’d Have At My Bookish Party

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Hello! I hope everyone is doing alright at the moment. It has been so many weeks since I’ve been further than my house and garden which feels very, very strange but I think lockdown is going to start easing a bit soon. I’m finding this hard like most people are but honestly I’m more worried that if it’s ended too soon there could be a second wave which would be incredibly damaging. However, to take my mind off all this, I have been thinking about which authors (living or deceased) I would invite if I threw a bookish party! I enjoyed thinking about this one so here goes!

1. Charlotte Bronte

Why:

Jane Eyre is one of my favourite books and I would love to meet it’s creator. All of the Brontë sisters led fascinating and pretty sad lives and all three died young. I wish Charlotte had more time to write even more brilliant books.

2. Daphne Du Maurier

Why:

For me she is the queen of atmosphere! Rebecca is one of the scariest books I’ve read which is incredibly impressive considering the lack of gore/scares. However, it’s all in the feeling with Rebecca and I really need to get around to reading many more of Du Maurier’s novels.

3. Madeline Miller

Why:

Both Song of Achilles and Circe are just such amazing and gorgeously written books and both among my all time favourites. I would love to meet Madeline because I love Greek Mythology too so I think we’d have a lot in common!

4. Edgar Allan Poe

Why:

I mean, he’s just so strange that I think he’d be a fascinating party guest. His life was odd, his writing is amazing and his death was super mysterious. I’m not sure how charming he would be but he would certainly be interesting to talk to.

5. Elena Ferrante

Why:

She’s one of my favourite authors, her Neapolitan Novels are honestly sublime. The question mark is because she has never revealed her true identity. There’s been lots of rumours about who she really is but I kind of like the mystery! I would love to talk to her though, and I promise I would keep her real identity a secret!

6. Fredrik Backman

Why:

His books are all so beautiful and full of heart. He’s the only living male author on this list and that’s because the characters he creates always find their way into my heart and stay there and so I’d love to meet him.

7. Jane Austen

Why:

I think she would be fantastic fun at a party. She was intelligent, funny and incredibly witty, something I think is a little underestimated in some adaptions of her brilliant work. She would definitely be invited to my imaginary bookish party!

8. Oscar Wilde

Why:

I love Oscar Wilde’s work. The Picture of Dorian Gary is my favourite, closely followed by The Importance of Being Earnest. His life was blighted by injustice due to his homosexuality and I wish he could live a longer life than he did without having to deal with that unfair persecution and disgraceful imprisonment for something which should never have been a crime. His writing is intensely quotable and he was so witty and sparkling that I think he’d be an awesome party guest.

9. Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley – author of Frankenstein - The British Library

Why:

I would love to meet the woman who I think did a great deal for feminism. She helped shape the horror genre and both her and her mother were amazing, powerful women. Frankenstein is brilliant and Mary Shelley was a lot, lot more than just Percy Bysshe Shelley’s wife.

10. Beth O’Leary

Why:

Both The Flatshare and more recently The Switch have totally filled my heart with warmth and joy, which is sorely necessary just now. I smiled so much reading both of these fantastic books so I can only assume that their author is a lovely person who I would love to invite to my imaginary bookish party!

Well that’s it! Ten authors I would invite to my bookish party! It would certainly be an interesting group of people to hang out with, and theres probably another 50 I would love to have there but these are the ten that sprung into my mind immediately!     I included a bunch of authors in my ttt this week too. Chazza and Jane made my invite list. Yes I call Charlotte Bronte Chazza now because we are just such besties after my dinner party……. 😂😂😂😂 But I am so curious about the Neapolitan novels Christine. I don’t know what planet I’ve been living on but I entirely missed the hype on those. It was only when a local Irish book store did a top ten of their biggest selling titles over the last decade and Ferrante was on the list that I went ‘what now, who now’!! Like how did I miss the hype on four books??? So you highly recommend them I assume. I’ll definitely have to seek out the first one in the library when things get back to whatever the new normal will be and I’ll be able to leave the house. I miss my library trips so much. I’m so fascinated by the idea that she’s entirely unknown. Adds such a compelling dynamic to her books.

      Thank you so much lovely! Please can I call Charlotte Bronte Chazza too? 😂😂 I kind of missed the original hype on the Neapolitan novels too which worked out quite well because then I didn’t have to wait for them to come out one by one! I’d definitely recommend them – they are a really fascinating look at a lifelong friendship between two girls in Naples and it’s now one of my all time favourite series. They’re really honest and real-feeling in the sense that the characters aren’t always likeable but brilliantly written! And I find the mystery surrounding who the author is so interesting considering how few authors are really anonymous nowadays! Once lockdown is over I really hope you maybe give the first one a try if you fancy it! Can’t wait to hear what you think! Hope you’re having a nice week! ♥️💗💙💜🧡

    I love this list! I adore Beth O’Leary and The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my absolute favorite classics. I haven’t read Importance of Being Earnest yet so I should definitely add that to my list for this year!

    OMG, so much yes to Fredrik Backman! Can I snag an invite to your bookish party with him? 😉 I’ll even take a crack at learning Swedish just for the occasion lol. His books always get me right in the feels, even when I go in fully prepared to have my heart ripped out. Definitely one of my favorite authors!
