Review:
Reputation is a book I’ve been eagerly anticipating reading this year so I was very pleased to finally get it into my hands! The story follows Emma Webster, an MP with a reputation for respectability and passion for the issues she is fighting for. However, her reputation gets called into question as she becomes implicated in the murder of a tabloid journalist and her life begins to unravel.
I have to say, I found Reputation really quite addictive. Emma is an interesting and complex character with a lot going on beneath the surface. I don’t want to give plot details away but I found the way events unfolded incredibly compelling. Themes like the abuse those in the public eye, and most especially women in the public eye have to endure simply for standing up for what they believe in and doing a job they were elected to do made Reputation at times a rather harrowing read. I cannot comprehend having such vile threats and abuse hurled at me, whether in ‘real life’ or even more sinisterly, in some ways, from an online and completely anonymous person. This is a book that doesn’t hold back in demonstrating just how nasty the online world can be and it is truly frightening. Reputation is also very much about perception and how easily someone’s public persona can turn on a dime. It is an engaging and intelligent thriller which you won’t be able to turn away from. Highly recommended!
