Summary:

TJ Devlin is the charming disappointment in the prominent Devlin family, all of whom are lawyers at their highly successful firm―except him. After a stint in prison and rehab for alcoholism, TJ can’t get hired anywhere except at the firm, in a make-work job with the title of investigator.

But one night, TJ’s world turns upside down after his older brother John confesses that he just murdered one of the clients, an accountant he’d confronted with proof of embezzlement. It seems impossible coming from John, the firstborn son and Most Valuable Devlin.

TJ plunges into the investigation, seizing the chance to prove his worth and save his brother. But in no time, TJ and John find themselves entangled in a lethal web of deception and murder. TJ will fight to save his family, but what he learns might break them first.

Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Lisa Scottoline but if definitely won’t be the last. I really enjoyed The Truth About the Devlins, a fast paced, witty and gripping read about family dynamics, drama and deep dark secrets. The Devlin family is fascinating and I found the interplay between their differing personalities and agendas utterly intriguing. The story clips along at the perfect pace with short chapters that make you want to read just one more before having to put the book down.

The narrative is focused on black sheep of the Devlin family, TJ, a recovering alcoholic who has spent time in prison. Despite this, I found him totally charming and thoroughly likeable throughout. He is flawed, as most of us are, but he’s also funny, quick witted and ultimately a good person. His relationships with his family were enlightening and his desire to save his brother and the rest of the family from the repercussions of certain actions makes him really easy to root for. I also found his journey as a recovering alcoholic really interesting and felt it was dealt with sensitively by Scottoline. Overall, The Truth About the Devlins is an entertaining, addictive, snappy and satisfying mystery that I would definitely recommend.
