Summary:

Late at night . . .

Abi and Ben are driving home down foggy country roads, arguing about having had to cut short their weekend away when they take a wrong turn. Abi’s driving, but her eyes leave the road for a moment as she says something to Ben – just as he gasps. A man is in front of the car, waving a torch. Abi swerves to avoid him.

You see a family stranded . . .

Ben tells her they should stop and go back, but Abi refuses. It’s dark, the roads are isolated and they don’t know this stranger. But, as Abi continues on, they see a broken-down car. Every instinct is still telling Abi to drive by, but then she notices the woman holding a car seat with a baby in it.

Would you stop?

For a moment, Abi hesitates, but they can’t leave a mother and baby on the side of the road. Agreeing to give the family a lift, they set off again. But now these strangers are inside their car and it might be the worst mistake they have ever made . . .

Review:

I was really intrigued by the premise of One Wrong Turn and happily, it totally lived up to my expectations for a thrilling and propulsive story that I could not stop reading until the end. The narrative jumps back and forth between Abi and Ben in the present, who make the decision to offer help, and a lift, to a couple that they find on the side of the road during bad weather, and Paul and Samantha in the hours and days leading up to the predicament they ultimately find themselves in and that puts them on a collision course with Abi and Ben. This structure works perfectly, keeping the reader in the action but offering tantalising hints about what is really going on here.

This is one of those books that you end up basically reading in one go, despite it being fairly chunky, because you keep telling yourself ‘just one more chapter’ until you’ve reached the end! It’s an incredibly addictive read, helped by short and snappy chapters and a plot that expertly twists and turns multiple times, keeping you totally hooked. The story is fairly over the top in the best way possible, and often nail-bitingly tense with drama. It definitely makes you question what you would do in Abi and Ben’s situation and has some genuine shocks which I absolutely loved. Overall, One Wrong Turn is an immensely entertaining and intense thriller which will keep you reading long into the night, desperate to find out how it all ultimately ends! Highly recommend.
