Summary:

Travel is easier, more accessible, and more tempting than ever before in today’s world. But what impact is our globetrotting having on local communities and the environment?

From his own experiences spending time in countries from Spain to Argentina to Japan, travel writer Daniel Maurer has seen firsthand the impact of growing cultural homogenization and the anger at the tourists driving it. Some cities already have plans in place to combat overtourism, including tourist taxes, carbon emission targets and Airbnb bans, and in the coming years, more will take drastic measures to tackle not only a flood of tourists but a growing worldwide workforce of ‘location-independent professionals’

Technological advances are also changing the way we interact with the world, and the future promises amazing things, from flying taxis to VR headsets; AI travel influencers to self-driving cars. But there’s a constant battle between technology making things more easily accessible, and the need to reduce human impact on the world.

What choices might we make when it comes to traveling in the future?

Review:

I’m not someone who travels often and yet it’s a topic I find really quite fascinating. The Future of Travel is an incredibly interesting read on the subject of what travel will look like in the coming years and the repercussions of the coming changes. It covers so many timely and important issues like AI and technology, environmental impact, overtourism and the effect on more remote communities. Daniel Maurer brings up so many questions that cannot fail to make the reader think about the importance of these problems and the plausible solutions and consequences for the world as a whole. The Future of Travel is a short but extremely compelling read which is written with intelligence and evident sensitivity. I found it so interesting and it made me consider quite a few points that I hadn’t previously given much thought to. The possible implications on travel of the rise of artificial intelligence is a topic which is both slightly frightening and potentially pretty seismic in terms of scale. It is covered here with care and insight. In fact, all of the subjects within The Future of Travel are clearly well researched and poised to make the reader reconsider their point of view on certain travel-related concerns. It is a fascinating little book that I would recommend whether you are a frequent traveler or not.

Huge thanks to Nikki Griffiths and Melville House for having me on the tour and my copy of the book. My review is entirely my own honest opinion.
