Summary:
‘Emergency. Which service do you require?’
‘He’s trying to burn down my house. He’s going to kill me.’
Anne Evans was a ‘nuisance caller’. She would repetitively dial 999 in desperate panic, screaming down the phone that ‘he’ was going to burn her alive…
But after years of false alarms, people stopped listening.
Now, as the smoke clears, DCI Liz Field can only watch helplessly as Anne’s charred home collapses, her body still trapped inside.
The blaze leaves scant evidence behind, but the more Field’s team uncover in the rubble, the more disturbing the case becomes. This wasn’t merely arson, it was murder, tailored to the victim’s worst nightmare.
Everyone thought Anne was just a paranoid recluse. But is it really paranoia, if all that you feared comes true?
Review:
Nothing Left Behind is the second book in the Detective Liz Field series, the first of which was No Safe Place. You can definitely read Nothing Left Behind as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading No Safe Place as well if possible because it’s brilliant! I honestly loved this tense police procedural from start to finish, it’s a bit of a slow burn but everything unfolds at just the right pace in my opinion and works beautifully at building tension and revealing bits and pieces of the puzzle expertly. I think one of the things I loved most about Nothing Left Behind is that it feels genuinely plausible and feels, to me at least, like the manner in which a real police investigation would proceed, which gives the whole thing a real sense of authenticity. There are absolutely twists and turns but they feel earned and not completely out of the realm of possibility which is testament to Hannah Brennan’s fantastic writing. Detective Field is a great lead character, I find her no nonsense attitude immensely likeable. She’s a slightly older female character than you often find in police procedurals and I so appreciated that as something a bit different and also much needed in the genre. The case that Field finds herself in charge of is harrowing and heartbreaking and it intertwines perfectly with a seemingly unrelated case going on at the same time in a beautifully crafted way. The writing is strong, the secondary characters intriguing and I was completely gripped from beginning to end. If you enjoy intelligent, thoughtful, and authentic mysteries or thrillers with a brilliant main character then I really can’t recommend Nothing Left Behind, and indeed this series, highly enough. I’ve already preordered the next instalment because I enjoyed this one so much!
