Review:

I love reading thrillers and I am always looking for something original and new in a genre that can seem a little repetitive sometimes. Just is definitely different to the stereotypical thriller and I very much enjoyed reading it. This book immediately feels really current with it’s depiction of the refugee crisis that has been in the news for the last few years and it brings to light some of the brutal realities of the issue. I thought that by taking on such a controversial and weighty issue the author managed to bring a realness and authenticity to the story she is telling in Just.

Saying that – despite the difficult topics this story involves, it is not a depressing read. There is actually some really funny moments and humorous touches that brought a lightness to the book which I enjoyed. There were quite a few great pop culture references that I thought were nicely done and amusing. I think the writing style also made this read quite different for me – the author has a unique tone which works well and the dialogue felt realistic.

The characters are also interesting and their connections to each other are intriguing straight away. I particularly liked the relationship between Lucienne (Scott’s mother) and her colleague Finlay – it felt natural and like a genuine friendship. I also thought the romance aspect was well done. I’m not a romance reader in general but I don’t mind it being part of the story if it doesn’t become the sole focus and here it was important but the romance didn’t take over which I think is perfect in a thriller.

I thought the story was good but at times it did feel slightly convoluted. Events spiralled into the dramatic quite abruptly and there is a lot of jumping about in time and place which does take some getting used to. It did, however, keep things unpredictable and at times I really had absolutely no idea where everything would end up which was certainly exciting.

Overall I really enjoyed reading Just and if you are looking for a thriller that is slightly out of the ordinary then I think this book would be a great choice. It is gripping, dramatic and full of twists and turns.
